A Rainy Start, a Radiant Finish: Kaitlyn & Billy’s Intimate Wedding at Frelinghuysen Arboretum and Autodidact Beer

There’s something truly special about micro weddings—especially when they’re set at dreamy locations like a botanical garden and a local craft brewery. Kaitlyn and Billy’s wedding day on April 24th was a beautiful celebration of love, family, and things they love. With their four daughters between them and only their closest friends and family in attendance, the day felt intimate, intentional, and completely their own.

Micro weddings, like that of Kaitlyn and Billy, offer a unique charm that larger weddings often overlook. With fewer guests, couples can prioritize meaningful interactions and create an atmosphere of deep connection. This was evident as Kaitlyn and Billy shared their day with those who mattered most to them, allowing for heartfelt conversations and genuine laughter.

A First Look in the Rain, Followed by Sunshine at Frelinghuysen Arboretum

The significance of a first look cannot be overstated; it’s a moment that encapsulates the excitement and emotion of the day. For Kaitlyn and Billy, standing under the gray clouds, they had a private moment, away from the hustle and bustle of the day, where they could take a deep breath and savor the anticipation of their vows.

The day began with Kaitlyn and Billy’s first look, which took place under an umbrella of gray clouds and unexpected spring rain. But just as quickly as the weather shifted, so did the mood—because by the time guests arrived at Frelinghuysen Arboretum for the ceremony, the skies had cleared and the sun began to shine.

Nestled in the heart of Morris County, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is always a favorite New Jersey wedding venue of ours for its stunning natural backdrops and tranquil atmosphere. Their ceremony took place in one of the garden’s lush, green spaces, surrounded by blooming trees and the soft sounds of nature. It was simple, heartfelt, and full of joy.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s stunning landscapes create the perfect backdrop for wedding photography, with each season offering its own beauty. In spring, the blooming flowers and lush greenery provide vibrant colors, making every snapshot a work of art. This venue not only enhances the visual appeal but also complements the joyous atmosphere of a wedding celebration.

Laid-Back Reception at Autodidact Beer

After capturing a few relaxed family portraits on the arboretum grounds, we all made our way to Autodidact Beer in Morris Plains. If you’ve never considered hosting a wedding reception at a craft brewery, this wedding might just convince you.

Craft breweries like Autodidact Beer not only serve unique brews but also foster a relaxed, welcoming environment. Guests can indulge in a variety of flavors while enjoying the laid-back ambiance, making it an ideal setting for couples who want to focus on fun and connection rather than formalities.

The couple chose Autodidact Beer for its casual vibe, great brews, and welcoming space—perfect for a couple who wanted to ditch the traditional timeline and simply enjoy time with their guests. There were no formalities beyond a sweet first dance, and the rest of the evening was spent hanging out, catching up with old friends, and sharing laughs with their daughters and loved ones.

Flexible timelines at micro weddings allow couples to savor each moment without feeling rushed. Dancing, mingling, and enjoying food become the focus, rather than adhering to a strict schedule. This thoughtful approach encourages guests to relax and fully engage in the spirit of celebration.

Tacos + Craft Beer = A Perfect Match

Adding to the fun and flavor of the night, the reception was catered by A Taco Affair, a modern taco catering company known for their creative twists and crowd-pleasing bites. Guests loved the variety and flavors, and they paired perfectly with the rotating selection of beers on tap at the brewery.

The taco catering by A Taco Affair brought an exciting, casual dining experience to the wedding. With their inventive menu, guests were able to sample a range of delicious options that appealed to diverse tastes, creating a memorable culinary journey throughout the evening.

Why We Love Micro Weddings at Micro Breweries

We photograph weddings of all shapes and sizes, but there’s something especially magical about micro weddings—and even more so when they’re held at micro breweries. The relaxed energy, the meaningful guest list, the creative food and drink choices… it’s the perfect formula for a wedding that feels authentic and memorable.

Micro weddings at micro breweries promote a unique blend of intimacy and celebration. Couples can create customized experiences that reflect their personalities, from the choice of food to the beer selection. This level of personalization makes the wedding day feel more authentic and tailored to the couple’s story.

Kaitlyn and Billy’s day didn’t have any over-the-top drama or standout “wow” moments—it was simply a celebration of love and connection, which is exactly what a wedding should be.

The longer I do this, the more I love the simplicity of micro weddings, the flow of the day and the types of couples they attract. So, without further delay, check out some of my favorite images from this wedding!
